The Kashan carpet originates in a town of the same name located in the western portion of central Iran. It was a lonely treeless area where the inhabitants found their artistic outlet in carpet weaving and other fine textile production. As the industry developed the quality and fame of the Kashan carpet grew. The design and artistry of the carpet is of a very high standard and it remains today as one of the truly great and classic weaves. Woven in either an all-over design or with a central medallion and corner design, the Kashan carpet is beautifully balanced and graceful. In soft earthtones or richly colored in deep reds and blues, the pallet of colors work in beautiful harmony with the design.

Have You Turned Your Rug This Year?

Happy Fall! We can't believe September is over and October is here. Crazy how fast time flies.

The arrival of a new season is the perfect time to do one of the most important, and easiest things, you can do for your rug - turning your rug. It's a simple task, but the extra TLC will go a long way to protect the quality and longevity of your rug.

A simple turn and you're done for the year. If your rug experiences heavy traffic, we recommend turning your rug every 6 months.

We know this is hard to remember to do every year, so set a calendar reminder. Schedule a reminder for once a year or for every 6 months, and then have the event repeat every year. Just remember to add an end date (trust us, your computer/phone like end dates). You won't have to think about it for a very long time and your rug will appreciate the extra effort.

From our Clearance Section: Heriz

 

We have some amazing rugs in our showroom at the moment, and so many of those amazing rugs are in our clearance section, including these two rugs. We love working with you to find you the perfect rug to add to your home and will do whatever we can to find that rug for you. Each rug is a piece of art and bringing one home will add such a richness to any room in your home. Our clearance section is filled with traditional and nontraditional, small and large, and we have rugs that will fit everyone's budget.

These two rugs are both called Heriz, aren't they gorgeous? I love the traditional colors with the unexpected shapes. The Heriz district is about 40 miles east of Tabriz and comprises many weaving villages, all in northwestern Iran. Most Heriz carpets are angular in design, with a large geometric medallion. Coloring is primarily reds and rusts, often with pastels. Most of the old Heriz we see now are in 9x12 room sizes.

Caring For Your Carpet: Helpful Tips

Liquid Spills

1. Get to the spot as soon as possible.
2. Blot (NEVER RUB) all excess liquid with a clean white cloth or paper towel until dry. Be sure to use a white cloth, dyes and color used in towel paper can transfer to the rug surface.
3. Make a mixture of dishwashing liquid that you use in your sink (not dishwasher soap) and water. A tablespoon of white vinegar can be added if the spill has an odor. Wet your cloth and wring it out. Place it on the spot and blot gently. Use a dry cloth and blot. Continue alternately with the wet cloth and dry cloth until the blotted water is clear and appears to be clean. You are in essence flushing the spot.
4. If you can put something under the rug to raise the wet spot off the floor, do so.

Animal Stains

If you have a new puppy, roll up your rugs until the puppy is housebroken. In the event of an accident, try to get to the area as soon as possible. If the stain is still wet, there is a better chance of totally removing it. Follow the liquid spill directions above, using the white vinegar. If the spot is already dry, try the liquid spill directions above and call us to professionally clean your rug.

Solid Spills

1. Get to the spot as soon as possible.
2. Use a dull knife to scrape the surface clean.
3. Vacuum the area.

Care Tips

• Turn your rug every year. With heavy traffic, turn it every six months.
• With heavy traffic, we recommend we professionally clean your rug every 1-3 years. With light traffic, every 3-5 years.
• Always pad your rug with a high quality pad. Padding extends the life of your rug by protecting it against wear, dirt and being crushed by footsteps. Think of it as a shock absorber, acting like a cushion between your rug and the hardness of a floor. The padding also keeps the rug from slipping around.
• Vacuum your rug normally, the more the better. The stronger the vacuum, the better. DO NOT VACUUM THE FRINGE. As you vacuum, put your foot on the fringe and have the vacuum hit your foot.
• Keep up with any repairs that may come up. A little problem can turn into a bigger one if not attended to. It will also keep the expense down of any future repairs.
• Occasionally, a tuft will “sprout” above the others. This can be trimmed evenly with the rest of the pile.
• Prevent moths in your rug by always keeping the rug in use. Keep turning the rug and always vacuum regularly. If the rug is partly under a bed, be sure to vacuum the dark, protected areas and turn the rug. If the rug has to be stored, do not wrap it in paper. If possible, unroll monthly and vacuum and move it around.
• If you need to professionally store your home’s furnishings, ask the right questions of movers and storage facilities-are they willing to open your rugs for you monthly?

Design Elements Within Rugs

Oriental rugs by nature are patterned rugs with one or more of the following elements:

Border - A series of bands running around the perimeter of rug with repeated motifs.

Ground or Field - An expanse of rug within the Border.

Medallion - A large central design that is different from the field of the carpet, or, a smaller design that is repeated evenly throughout the field.

Corners - A design in the four corners of the field that resembles portions of the Medallion.

All Over - A curvilinear design that covers the field.

Repeated Pattern - A number of motifs with in the Border, repeated, covering the field.

Asymmetrical or Directional - A clear top and bottom to the design, often pointed or arched at the top, often used in prayer.

Symmetrical - An All Over design, with or without a Medallion, that is the same from either end or edge.

Open Field - A large area of color within the Border, often with central Medallion.

Designs usually fall into two categories, geometric or angular designs that use more straight lines and angles to form the pattern (i.e. "rural rugs" like Kazak and Heriz) and the intricate patterns that are curvilinear with floral motifs and interwoven branches (i.e. "city rugs"
